Arc (of arc.io) was a peer-to-peer content delivery network. But during its existence, it was more than that.
An interesting aspect of it was that it monetized the bandwidth of users. During 2020-2024, I had a simple goal: to create free web applications while using the least amount of bandwidth. Parked browsers would use their spare bandwidth and storage to power a unique distributed network.
Approval processes were lengthy, and weren’t properly communicated to website owners. The terms of service specified what websites were allowed to use Arc or how they could use it. During then, the policy on content deemed “Facebook unfriendly” had an æffect on what I did.
Since its shutdown on 2024, there hasn’t been anything like it from what I can see. Now, my goal is to just have fun, and leave if it isn’t.
